Tulum and Bacalar Team Up to Boost Local Farm Freshness
After a three-hour drive, producers in Tulum and Bacalar can now sell their fresh harvests directly to each other's markets, cutting out middlemen and boosting local economies.

The two city halls announced a joint effort to support small farmers moving goods between the municipalities. While the distance of 215 kilometers between the two towns poses a challenge, the arrangement aims to ensure that farmers can sell their produce more efficiently.
Diego Castañón Trejo, the mayor of Tulum, and José Alfredo Contreras Méndez, the mayor of Bacalar, toured the Mercado de la Prosperidad Compartida in Bacalar, where they discussed the logistics of transporting and selling produce. Both governments promised to support transportation and direct sales, aiming to return more profits to the growers.
Despite the positive intentions, the lack of specific details such as budget and start date means that the initiative's impact remains to be seen. For expats and digital nomads, this could mean more local, fresh options in the markets. However, the success of the arrangement will depend on how well the logistics are managed and whether the markets can adapt to the new system.
