New Tulum Taxi App: Fares to Be Transparent
In ten days, Tulum will see the launch of a new taxi app, Tiburones del Caribe, in collaboration with the California-based Flywheel. The app aims to standardize fares and offer real-time schedules for colectivos, addressing long-standing complaints about discretionary pricing.
Manuel Solís, secretary general of the taxi union, stated that the app will include four fare categories: out-of-town colectivos, local colectivos, standard taxis, and women-driven taxis (taxi rosa). The app will be available on both the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store within a month.
One of the most anticipated features is the real-time tracking of out-of-town colectivos, which already have GPS installed. This will allow passengers to know exactly when their van departs and avoid waiting at the side of the highway.
Additionally, the union has been working on standardizing the look of its collective units, putting drivers in uniforms, and ensuring that every vehicle displays its fare board. The QR code on the fare board leads to a more detailed price list, which is a step towards passenger transparency.
