Toronto Zoo Welcomes Its First and Only Wombat in Over Three Decades
The Toronto Zoo has named its newest addition, a baby wombat named Clover, in a community-wide vote that garnered over 16,000 votes. Clover is the first wombat born and raised at the Toronto Zoo in over 30 years and the second in its history. The zoo, under CEO Dolf DeJong, is excited to have the community help name the young marsupial, which will inspire guests to learn more about the species and become Guardians of Wild.
Wombats are known for their unusual birthing process, with the tiny, hairless and blind joey remaining inside the mother's pouch for about four months before becoming more independent. Clover, who is on her own schedule, may still disappear into the pouch for a feed.
DeJong highlighted the significance of Clover for the zoo, noting that she represents a connection between Toronto and Australia, and that she is the great-grandmother of the zoo's previous wombat Nan, who lived until 2018.
Visitors to the Australasia Pavilion can now catch glimpses of Clover exploring her habitat, though she remains very much on her own schedule and may disappear back into the pouch for feedings.
