Prepare your telescopes and wrap up warmly, because the Orionid meteor shower is peaking this week, providing a stellar show for Toronto’s night sky. As an Italian expat living in Toronto since 2018, I've noticed that the city's skies can be quite captivating, and this meteor shower is definitely not to be missed.

The Orionids, pieces of Halley’s Comet, will be visible from October 21 to 22, with the peak expected in the early morning hours. NASA reports that under ideal conditions, you can expect to see around 10 to 20 meteors per hour. For Toronto residents, the best viewing window is between 3:45 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday, when the moon will set, offering dark skies for the show.

Unlike some long-time residents who might have stopped paying attention to such celestial events, newcomers and those who appreciate the night sky will find this a great opportunity. To catch the full display, head to a dark location away from the city lights, and give your eyes 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. The meteors will originate near the constellation Orion, but they can be seen across the entire sky.

While you won’t need a telescope to enjoy the Orionids, a clear view of the sky is key. If you're a digital nomad or a visitor to Toronto, this is a perfect excuse to take a break from work and explore the city’s lesser-known outdoor spots. For a truly unique experience, consider a stargazing trip to Muskoka, where some of Ontario’s darkest skies await. The shower will remain active until November 7, so if you miss the peak, you still have a few more nights to catch the shooting stars.
