As a veterinarian in Toronto, I often see the resilience and emotional journeys of my clients as they navigate life's challenges. Recently, I attended the premiere of Prophetess at Tarragon Theatre and found it to be a deeply moving exploration of grief and the struggles of finding one’s way in a world that no longer makes sense.

A Moving Grief Journey on Stage: ‘Prophetess’ at Tarragon Theatre

The play, written by Ho Ka Kei, centers around Margaret, a university English department chair who has become increasingly isolated after the loss of her husband, Henry. Karen Robinson delivers a powerhouse performance as Margaret, capturing the grief, confusion, and loneliness of a person trying to find their footing in a world that no longer recognizes their pain. The role is complex, and Robinson’s portrayal is nothing short of remarkable, making Margaret’s journey palpable and relatable.

Supporting the main narrative is the younger character Anne, played by Natasha Mumba, who offers a glimmer of hope through friendship and understanding. The character of Elizabeth, played by Christine Horne, adds a layer of comedic and dramatic tension, further enriching the story.

The play explores the societal expectations around grief, showing how those around Margaret find it easier to remove her from her position rather than support her. This exploration of how grief is often met with misunderstanding and isolation resonates deeply, especially for expats and digital nomads who may be navigating similar feelings of being out of place in a new city.
