Pharmacies in Santurce Face Potential Shutdowns Due to Rising Energy Costs
Local community pharmacies in Santurce are bracing for potential closures due to skyrocketing electricity prices. According to the Community Pharmacies Association of Puerto Rico (AFCPR), these increases could lead to reduced operating hours and, in some cases, the closure of pharmacies. The issue has prompted the AFCPR to request that the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) refrain from approving additional rate hikes.

Isaías Serrano, the president of the AFCPR, explains that community pharmacies rely heavily on prescription medication sales, which already cover their operational costs. Any additional expenses, such as those from increased energy costs, cannot be passed on to patients. These costs, compounded by the need for refrigeration and medical equipment, are particularly burdensome for small and midsize businesses.
With more than 850 community pharmacies operating in Puerto Rico, the situation in Santurce is a microcosm of the broader challenge faced by businesses here. Residents and digital nomads in Santurce should monitor the situation, as potential closures could impact their access to essential medications and services. If you're a business owner or healthcare provider, consider supporting local advocacy efforts to help mitigate these challenges.
