Puerto Morelos Steps Up Mental Health Initiatives
It was a crisp morning in Puerto Morelos, and I was sipping my morning coffee, trying to decide what to write about today. The news of a new mental health initiative caught my eye. It turns out that the local authorities are stepping up their efforts to promote mental health and address addiction, especially among children and young people. The mayor, Blanca Merari, presided over the first session of the Municipal Committee for Mental Health and Addictions 2026.
The event brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from different institutions. The goal is to continue working together to meet the needs of the community. The secretary general, José de Jesús, highlighted the importance of mental health as a fundamental aspect of well-being and quality of life. He emphasized that addressing mental health is about dignity, recognizing that everyone has the right to timely, professional, and stigma-free care.
The initiative includes awareness campaigns and materials aimed at teens, educators, parents, and caregivers. There will also be activities in schools, information campaigns, and interactive talks with specialized staff to help identify risk factors and guide people towards the appropriate support.
Quit my marketing job in Miami, sold most of what I owned, and drove to Mexico with two cats and a vague plan. Puerto Morelos wasn't on my radar until I got here. Now I can't imagine leaving. Writing about expat life, local food, and the freedom of starting over.
