As of October 17, 2026, the aftermath of the October 9 earthquake continues to affect families in the province of Coclé, particularly in Penonomé. With 132 individuals still residing in shelters, the disruption extends beyond just the immediate physical damage to homes. Children are left without access to their schools, impacting their routines and education.

At the Federico Zúñiga Feliú Educational Center in Penonomé, structural inspections reveal a yellow rating, indicating the need for caution but no immediate danger. However, the psychological impact on students and families cannot be overlooked. The school serves 2,246 students, all of whom are currently unable to attend classes, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the community.

Local officials, such as Cecibel Jarquín, the provincial director of the Ministry of Social Development, are working to assess the needs of affected families. Shelters like the one at the Ifarhu headquarters provide temporary safety, but the long-term solutions remain uncertain.
