Can I replace my kitchen cabinets and counters in a rental?

I've been at my place for 7 years and I'm tired of the old, warped kitchen cabinets and counters. I'd like to replace them with new ones, but I'm not sure if it's possible without the landlord's approval. I'm willing to contribute to the cost, but I want to know if it's worth it and if it's something I should ask my landlord about.

If you offered to pay for the entire renovation, the landlord might be more willing to let you make changes. If it's a stabilized apartment and you're happy there, it might be worth the investment.

It ultimately depends on the management company. In our case, we asked if they could refresh the cabinets when we renewed our lease last year, and they agreed to do it. It's worth asking, especially if you've been a good tenant for 7 years.

I wouldn't consider making changes in a non-rent stabilized apartment. In a stabilized apartment, I would only consider it if I was confident I would be staying there for a long time.
