NYC’s Subways Get a Boost: ADA Upgrades Funded by Congestion Pricing
Walking through Bryant Park, you might not notice the construction work happening at 42nd Street-Bryant Park station. But this week, groundbreaking took place for a project that will bring accessibility improvements to six subway stations, funded by the city’s congestion pricing program. As a longtime resident, I’ve seen the struggles of navigating the subway system, and these upgrades are a significant step forward.

The Bryant Park station will see the construction of four new elevators, including one that connects to the Times Square Shuttle pathway. Other stations getting the ADA upgrade treatment include Kingsbridge Road, 167th Street, Gates Avenue, Briarwood, and Parsons Boulevard. The MTA estimates that these improvements will affect over 100,000 riders daily, enhancing their commuting experience.
This isn’t just a nice gesture; it’s practical. If you or someone you know uses the subway frequently, these upgrades mean smoother rides and greater independence. So, keep an eye out for these changes and prepare for a more accessible and user-friendly transit system.
