New ‘Debt Demolisher’ Program Helps Reduce City Fines for New Yorkers
New York City has launched a new program called the ‘Debt Demolisher’ aimed at helping businesses and homeowners reduce their outstanding city fines. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city’s Department of Finance (DOF) Commissioner Richard Lee announced the 90-day program on Tuesday.

The program allows participants to resolve their outstanding debt at a reduced cost, with accrued interest potentially waived. This initiative aims to make it more affordable for small business owners and homeowners to get back into compliance and avoid future penalties. According to the mayor's office, the program is expected to bring in $25 million in fines that would otherwise remain uncollected.
However, not all fines are eligible for the program. Certain conditions, such as fines entered in court after July 15, 2026, or those related to citizen complaints, do not qualify. The program runs through January 10, 2027, and more details can be found at nyc.gov/debtdemolisher.
