Coney Island’s 1890 Lighthouse Could Be Protected as a Landmark
Walking along Coney Island’s boardwalk, you might spot an old lighthouse that most New Yorkers have never seen. This historic structure, dating back to 1890, could soon be recognized as a landmark, potentially opening up new opportunities for preservation and public access.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has voted to calendar the Coney Island Light for consideration. Built to guide maritime traffic during Coney Island’s golden age, the lighthouse, along with a nearby keeper’s house, could be protected from potential development. However, it’s uncertain whether landmarking will grant public access to the site.
“These rare, distinctive, and well-preserved structures remind us of the crucial role that the Coast Guard has played in maritime history and the importance of New York Harbor as a significant gateway to the nation,” Matthew Postal, a researcher for the LPC, said.
The process will include a public hearing, followed by a vote. For New York residents and digital nomads, this development could offer a chance to explore a part of Coney Island’s rich history, should the landmark designation be approved.
