Behind the Scenes: A New Subway Photography Exhibition Celebrates Unsung Workers

A new photography exhibition, 'In Service: MTA Photographs by Christopher Payne,' offers a glimpse into the hidden infrastructure and dedicated workers that make our daily commutes possible. Commissioned by MTA Arts & Design, the exhibition features 50 photographs displayed on 52 decommissioned advertising lightboxes at five major transit hubs. These images were shot at 13 MTA facilities and manufacturing plants across four states, capturing the intricate work and coordination required to maintain the city's vast transit network. The exhibition is a celebration of the unseen efforts of maintenance workers, engineers, and other behind-the-scenes professionals.
One of the highlights is the work of Christopher Payne, who has a long-standing interest in the hidden infrastructure of the MTA.
