Why can't I crush cans and bottles for recycling?
Diensten 6 answers • Jenna Tremblay
I was at the recycling center today and decided to return all the cans and bottles I've collected at home. I took my bike and dragged two big plastic bags to the recycling center (each bag was 10 dollars, I spent the equivalent of two cans to drag cans to the recycling center). My earnings: 7 dollars. Why do I have to collect and drag this volume for 7 meager dollars?

Because the machine can't read the barcode if it's crushed.

Because the machines need to read the UPC code to function. It's not new, I agree that the recycling center's rollout has been poorly done, but the old machines at the grocery store worked the same way, I don't understand the fuss.

I went to drop off 2 bags yesterday and got 30 dollars, you must drink a lot more!

Or maybe the bags weren't as big as it seems, or he's already crushing his cans so more than half was refused/not counted.

Normally, those that don't pass through the machine go to the counter to sell them.

That's why I leave the cans in a cardboard box next to the trash bags. It's not worth the effort for me, but there are people who use it to survive and it's not a big effort to separate them.
