Floods Recede in Luang Namtha, But Recovery Lags as Roads Remain Blocked

Floodwaters have largely receded in Luang Namtha province, but the aftermath is far from over. According to Deputy Head of the Commission for Information and Education in Luang Namtha, Koulasin Vikhaylou, several roads remain impassable and power and water supplies are still cut off in some areas. Aid efforts are ongoing, particularly in the Boten border area.

The flash flood, which hit more than 30 villages in Luang Namtha, caused significant damage to homes, farmland, and infrastructure. The province was declared a disaster zone on Sunday due to the severity of the flooding. Transport links are still disrupted, with Lao Airlines canceling flights between Vientiane and Luang Namtha until conditions allow.

While the immediate danger has passed, the recovery phase is proving challenging. Residents in Luang Prabang are also affected, with over 190 households in Nambak district hit by flooding. Local authorities are providing assistance, but the situation remains concerning.
