As we settle into the tail end of September and the beginning of October, Los Cabos is hosting a unique and emotionally moving event: sea turtle hatching season. This year, if you're planning a trip, you can't miss the opportunity to participate in a turtle release, a conservation effort that offers a profound and unforgettable experience.

The Baja Conservation Effort
Five species of sea turtles, including the critically endangered Leatherback, travel thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the Baja beaches. However, only a small percentage of these nests survive due to natural predators, tidal flooding, and tourist foot traffic. To combat this, local marine biologists and luxury resorts have formed the Sea Turtle Protection Network. Every night, teams patrol the beaches, carefully excavate nests, and relocate the eggs to incubation nurseries on resort grounds.

The Sunset Release Experience
After about 45 days, the eggs hatch, and the tiny turtles are released into the ocean just as the sun sets. Many top luxury resorts, such as Las Ventanas al Paraíso and Casa Dorada, invite guests to participate in this final stage. You'll be given a coconut shell holding a hatchling, and under the supervision of a marine biologist, you'll help the turtle make its way to the water. Watching these tiny creatures instinctively orient themselves towards the ocean is an incredibly powerful experience.

How to Participate Safely
To ensure the survival of the turtles, there are strict rules to follow. No bare hands allowed, as natural oils, sunscreen, and bacteria on human skin can interfere with the turtles' internal systems. Follow the guidance of the marine biologists to help these endangered species thrive.
