Medano Beach Cleanup Continues: What You Need to Know
Medano Beach is making a comeback, but it's still a work in progress.
The Impact of Desert Runoff
When Hurricane Marie swept through, it left behind a desert-turned-river that swept up everything in its path, depositing trash and tires right onto Medano Beach. Jorge Armando López Espinoza, the Director of Ecology and Environment for Los Cabos, reported that 70% of the debris is PET plastic bottles, while a surprising amount of heavy vehicle tires also washed ashore.
A Massive Coordinated Response
Authorities from federal, state, and local governments have joined forces to clean up the mess. Volunteers are diving into the bay to pull out heavy, sand-filled tires from depths of 12 to 15 meters. The goal is to prevent future debris from entering the ocean and damaging the local ecosystem.
Your Vacation Is Not Ruined
Your trip to Los Cabos is still on! The resort infrastructure is fully operational, and the weather is beautiful. While the shoreline is still being cleaned, residual debris continues to wash ashore. Cleanup crews work efficiently, and you can still relax on the sand without disruption.
Black Flags and Beach Safety
Black flags are still flying in certain areas due to lingering ocean debris and compromised water quality. Check the flags every morning before entering the water. Some sections of the beach may be clear by Thursday, so keep an eye out.
