Isla Mujeres’ Public Services Upgrade: An Ongoing Commitment to Community

For the past five years, Isla Mujeres has been systematically enhancing its public services, a commitment that has seen significant improvements in waste management, lighting, and overall municipal operations. As a fellow expat who has been living on the island for seven years, I've witnessed firsthand the tangible changes that have transformed the daily lives of residents and visitors alike.

At the start of the current administration, the island faced a daunting challenge of over 30,000 tons of accumulated waste in the transfer station. With just one garbage truck, the situation was dire. Today, that has changed dramatically. The municipal government now operates a fleet of 17 vehicles, effectively servicing the Zona Insular, Costa Mujeres, Ciudad Mujeres, and Francisco May areas. This robust setup ensures that waste is managed more efficiently, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

The modernization of lighting has also been a key focus. Over 12,600 LED luminaries have been installed, significantly improving safety and aesthetics across the island. This upgrade not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also boosts the island's appeal to tourists, who value a well-lit and maintained destination.
