I need to get to Ottawa this weekend, but I haven't taken the bus in ages and I think Greyhound is shut down. I'd love to know the current options and prices.

If you have a flexible schedule, you can take the train.

I've never taken the VIA train, but it appears to be quite pricey at $150 for a same-day round trip, which includes a return ticket.

I usually carpool with Poparide or Kangaride. It's about $25-$30 and they usually pick up from Berri-UQAM or Namur station. Some drivers drop off in downtown Ottawa near ByWard, but it varies.

It seems that ride-sharing with strangers is a common practice here, but I'm curious, is it usually men or women who offer these rides?

It's usually African men driving, and young people of all sexes as passengers. I'm a retired white woman, and I've never had a problem. My teenaged sister and elderly father also use the service, and they've had great experiences.

Another option is the Orléans Express bus, but be aware that their prices are around $60 per way when departing from Berri, and some buses are already fully booked.

If you're okay with riding with strangers and want to save money, use Poparide. It's usually $20-$35 and the pick-up and drop-off locations vary. Trains are more comfortable but expensive, and Flexbus or Megabus are cheaper but more 'professional'.

FlixBus has recently introduced service between Montreal and Ottawa.
