Work Permits in Da Nang: What Every Expat Needs to Know
Back in the land of Minneapolis winters, it was enough. Now, as a retired expat living in Da Nang, Vietnam, the beach sunrises and Vietnamese coffee have become my new norm. One aspect of this new life that’s not as straightforward is navigating the work permit process for expats. Here’s what you need to know to avoid any legal grey areas and ensure smooth sailing in your new home.
Who Needs a Work Permit?
Any foreigner working for a Vietnamese company must have a work permit. It’s a requirement that’s hard to overlook if you’re planning to stay and work in Da Nang.
Eligibility Requirements and Documents
To get a work permit, you need to be 18 or older, have a bachelor’s degree (or three years of relevant work experience), a clean criminal record, a health certificate, and a sponsoring Vietnamese employer. The process can take around 20 working days, and the permit is valid for up to two years, renewable once.
Digital Nomads and Remote Workers: The Grey Area
For digital nomads working for foreign clients remotely, there’s a legal grey area. Most operate on e-visas without official work authorization, but this can lead to issues. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on updates in Vietnamese immigration laws to stay on the right side of the law.
Remember, every expat's experience is different, but in Da Nang, a little bit of preparation and diligence can save you a lot of headaches. Stay tuned for more updates and advice to make your expat life in Da Nang as smooth as possible.
Thirty years of Minneapolis winters were enough. Retired from manufacturing, packed up, and landed in Da Nang. Best decision I ever made. Now it's beach sunrises, Vietnamese coffee, and figuring out healthcare as an expat retiree. Happy to share what I've learned.
