Cancún Prepares for Strong Rainfall: 350 Workers Mobilized for Flood Prevention
A heavy rain forecast for this Friday has prompted the deployment of 350 workers in Cancún to clear catchment areas and ensure drainage systems remain clear. The authorities have been on the ground since Thursday evening, conducting cleaning and monitoring operations on major avenues and streets. The focus is on preventing debris from blocking drains and minimizing water accumulation, which could lead to flooding.

The workers have been active in several key routes including Tulum, Sayil, Bonampak, Playa Las Perlas, La Costa, Xpuhil, Xel-Ha, Sunyaxchen, Palenque, Cobá, Chichén Itzá, Chacmool and Kabah. Additional work has been done in La Rioja, Huaycán, and 135th Avenue, as well as nearby streets.
Around 05:00 AM on Friday, a new team of workers began their duties to ensure the cleaning efforts do not stop, as monitoring continues to detect any potential water accumulation and respond to any incidents caused by the rains. The public is advised to drive with extra caution due to wet roads and reduced visibility. Additionally, the authorities request that citizens refrain from littering in public areas to avoid blocking the drainage systems.
Five years ago, I drove my entire life from Mexico City to Cancun in a packed Nissan. The plan was to stay six months. The Caribbean had other plans. Now I run an e-commerce business from a hammock (sometimes literally) and spend too much time arguing about which taqueria is the best.
