Cancún's Rainbow Tourism: A Year-Round Opportunity
Hey ExpatsList readers, it's Carlos here, the caribbeandreamer from ExpatsList. Five years ago, I packed up my life in Mexico City and drove down to Cancún, planning a six-month stay. Now, I run my e-commerce business from a hammock and spend way too much time arguing over the best taqueria. But there's a new development in town that could be a game-changer for expats and digital nomads like me: the rise of rainbow tourism.
According to Manuel Baeza from Grupo Cantón, Cancún has a strategic opportunity to capitalize on this niche market. Linger Méndez, the founder of Cancún Pride, highlights how the city has become a national leader in diversity tourism. While exact numbers are hard to come by, she notes that the influx of visitors for Pride events and related activities is generating significant economic benefits.
Méndez points to a group of over 900 international visitors who stayed in a hotel in the zone hotelera, showing that this market is not just a flash in the pan. The key, she argues, is spreading the economic benefits beyond just the big hotels to include the center of Cancún, restaurants, and other local businesses.
This isn't just about money though. It's about creating a safe, inclusive space for everyone to enjoy. As someone who's lived here for years, I can say that Cancún has a lot to offer, but it's great to see initiatives that make it even more welcoming. So, if you're an expat or digital nomad looking to make Cancún your home, keep an eye out for these new opportunities in the rainbow tourism sector.
Five years ago, I drove my entire life from Mexico City to Cancun in a packed Nissan. The plan was to stay six months. The Caribbean had other plans. Now I run an e-commerce business from a hammock (sometimes literally) and spend too much time arguing about which taqueria is the best.
