Navigating Canada’s Time Zone Quirks: What Toronto Expats and Digital Nomads Need to Know
Daylight saving time is ending on November 1st, but the changes this year will make your calendar a little more complicated. As a veterinarian in Toronto, I’ve noticed how these time adjustments can affect my work with clients, especially those who are new to the area. Here’s what you need to know to stay on time and avoid any scheduling headaches.

The map from AccuWeather shows that parts of Western Canada, like British Columbia, won’t be turning their clocks back, thanks to new laws that will keep daylight saving time in place year-round. Ontario, however, will switch certain communities to permanent daylight saving time, meaning that on November 1st, the time difference between Vancouver and Toronto will shrink from three hours to just two. This means that when it’s 9 a.m. in Vancouver, it will be 11 a.m. in Toronto.
For expats and digital nomads based in Toronto, this change will affect your work and personal life. Meetings with clients in British Columbia might now start an hour later, while your team in Alberta or Saskatchewan might end up being an hour ahead. Keeping track of everyone’s schedules will require a bit more attention, but with a little planning, you can stay on top of things.
The good news is that this change is just the beginning. Discussions on daylight saving time are ongoing, and it’s likely that more provinces will follow suit in the coming years. If you’re in the market for a new job or considering a move to another province, keep an eye out for these changes.
