Councillors Urge Equitable Social Housing Distribution in Calgary
After the Planning Commission approved a supportive housing project in east Calgary, local councillors are expressing concern over the overall distribution of social housing in the city. This issue highlights the need for a more equitable approach to housing support, particularly in densely populated areas.

Home Space Society and GGA Architecture proposed a 60-unit, high-complexity supportive housing facility on a city-owned parcel of land in the Meridian neighborhood. The project, which is expected to provide 24/7 care and specialized support, was approved by the Planning Commission but faces opposition from some councillors who argue that the city should not be disposing of municipal reserve land.
Councillor Shawn Small and Jacob Weber voted against the approval, citing the loss of park space as a significant issue. However, the bigger concern for many in the community is the potential saturation of social housing in certain areas, and the lack of communication with residents during the planning process.
According to Larry Leach, executive director of 12 Community Safety Initiative (12CSI), developers often fail to engage meaningfully with the community, treating it as a mere formality. This lack of communication can lead to concerns about safety, security, and the social impact of such projects in the area.
