Car break-ins in Virginia Highland neighborhood?

Car break-ins in Virginia Highland neighborhood?
Anders 7 answers • Caleb H
I live in Virginia Highland and my car was recently broken into while I was out. I've had this happen a few times before, but this time they smashed the window. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if there's anything we can do as a community to prevent it.

Reducing car break-ins requires making the crime no longer a low-risk-high-reward offense. Stolen guns can be sold for between $200 and $300, and the clearance rate for thieves is approximately 8%. Typically, the crime is charged as a misdemeanor, despite the thief's intent to commit a felony that can result in a five-year prison sentence.

I left my car unlocked on a street, and the next morning, a homeless individual was sleeping in the back seat.

I'm fairly certain people have slept in my vehicle. I've recently started locking it.

Growing up in Atlanta taught me to never leave valuables in my car and to always lock the doors. I've had my laptop stolen from my vehicle in the past, but the police were able to recover it.

There's a gang that's been hitting Virginia Highland, Poncey-Highlands, Old Fourth Ward, and Inman Park. They're looking for guns or other valuables, but they've never taken anything from anyone I've heard from, except for some loose cash in a glovebox.

We've had a similar experience living in a neighborhood with a high crime rate.
