I will be entering a shelter in NYC this week coming. My current home in Atlanta (staying with family) had ended. I have my passport, SS card, and birth certificate.

To prove your identity, you'll need to bring identification documents. In case of an emergency, it's a good idea to have contact information for a friend or family member. Pack clothes and personal care items, but leave behind anything that could be stolen or make you a target.

If you receive food stamps in Georgia, it's best to end your case now. You'll be eligible for public assistance here, which is a requirement for CityFHEPS to rent. Be aware that housing discrimination may occur, but you have rights to protect yourself.

Considering the cost of living in New York City, a shelter in Atlanta might be a more affordable option, especially during the winter months.

I'm originally from New York and no longer have any connections in Georgia.

I recently left a New York City shelter after a nine-month stay, which could have been shortened to three months if I had known the proper procedures.
