South Bronx Gets Its Largest Mural in History, Celebrating Community and Heritage
South Bronx residents can now gaze up at their towering public housing complex and see a vivid representation of their community's rich history and culture. A 307-foot mural, the tallest in the United States, now graces the exterior of NYCHA’s 29-story Morrisania Air Rights (MAR) development. The mural, titled “Un MAR de Gente/From Every Shore,” was designed by artist Nestor Omar Garcia, known as Angurria, in collaboration with Bronx native Fernando Ortiz. The artwork, which stretches across the southwest-facing facade, depicts MAR community members across generations, celebrating the residents and the neighborhood’s cultural legacy.

The project, commissioned by ArtBridge, engaged MAR residents through a series of workshops to gather stories and perspectives, ensuring that the mural reflects the diverse community it serves. Angurria, an award-winning muralist, transformed the building's facade into a canvas for community celebration and storytelling, recognizing the neighborhood’s pride and strength.
The M·A·C VIVA GLAM Fund and the Public Housing Community Fund provided financial support for the $165,000 mural, which not only beautifies the area but also serves as a powerful symbol of the South Bronx's resilience and cultural heritage.
