Mayor Mamdani Expands 100 Gold Street Project to Nearly 4,000 New Homes
New York City is taking a big step towards addressing its housing crisis with the expansion of the 100 Gold Street redevelopment project. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the plans to build nearly 4,000 new apartments, adding about 300 units to the original plan. The project, led by GFP Real Estate, will convert a nine-story office building into a high-rise mixed-use development featuring new homes and a senior center.

This isn't just a simple expansion; it's part of a broader strategy to repurpose government buildings for housing. The mayor highlighted, 'New York’s housing crisis demands that we build more-and that we use every tool we have to do it.' The project will include 1,000 permanently affordable and rent-stabilized apartments, a new senior center, and public fitness centers. The exact dimensions and number of units will be finalized through the public review process.
Previously, the project was a bargaining chip in a deal with local Council Member Chris Marte, who agreed to support rezoning of sites in his district in exchange for the Adams administration dropping plans for affordable senior housing on the Elizabeth Street Garden. Now, with the expansion, the project is moving forward with plans to relocate city agencies and provide much-needed housing in the Financial District.
