How can I stop feeling intimidated at the gym in Little Italy, Montreal?
Fitness & Sports 7 answers • Camila Machado
I've recently joined a gym in Little Italy, Montreal, and I'm feeling discouraged because everyone else seems so fit and in shape. I'm trying to get back into exercise after a few years of being inactive, but it's hard when I feel like I'm the only one who's not in shape. I just want to find a way to stop feeling so self-conscious and get back into a routine.

Building a habit of regular exercise is crucial for staying fit and healthy. It's essential to adopt a mindset similar to personal hygiene, where you don't need motivation to brush your teeth or shower. With consistent effort, motivation will eventually follow, and you'll focus on your own journey rather than the destination.

I've found that overcoming my own self-doubt and negative self-talk is a significant factor in staying motivated. It's amazing how a shift in perspective can help you focus on your own progress rather than comparing yourself to others.

It's interesting to think about why we often struggle with self-care and exercise. Perhaps it's because we're comparing ourselves to others rather than focusing on our own progress. Just as we wouldn't stop showering because everyone else is clean, we shouldn't let others dictate our self-care habits.

I started exercising at 32 years old, about 15 months ago. When I first joined the gym, I felt out of place among people who had been going regularly for over 10 years. However, I soon realized that everyone there respects newcomers, especially those who are just starting out, because they know how challenging it is to begin.

To stay healthy, I try to limit my sugar, salt, and fat intake and focus on eating fruits and vegetables. I also aim to take a 1- to 1.5-hour walk each day and do a few exercises to maintain my overall fitness level.

Working out alone can be the most difficult habit to form, especially when it comes to managing time and avoiding boredom. However, I highly recommend joining a group fitness class at your gym. Not only does it create a sense of accountability, but it also provides a social aspect and helps you build a personalized workout plan.

If you live in Montreal, you have numerous options beyond the standard gym. To become consistent, you need to find an activity you enjoy, whether it's swimming, playing volleyball, soccer, or ultimate frisbee, or trying out rock climbing, martial arts, or crossfit. You can also explore outdoor activities like cycling, running, or hiking.
