Montreal Marathon Weekend: Plan Your Commute Wisely
Moving to Montreal from France six years ago, I've witnessed firsthand how city life can change. This weekend, the city will be transformed once again as the 34th edition of the Marathon Beneva de Montréal takes over several neighborhoods. Whether you're a local or a visitor, it's crucial to plan your commute ahead of time to avoid getting caught in the (foot) traffic.

Saturday, October 10
Saturday morning events like the 1 km, 5 km, and 10 km races will see runners starting on Sherbrooke Street near the Olympic Park and finishing at Maisonneuve Park. Expect street closures on Sherbrooke Street East, Rosemont Boulevard, and residential streets around Louisiane Park and Joseph-Paré Park.
Most areas will reopen by mid-afternoon, but if you live outside the east end, you might not be affected too much. The MUHC says that the Saturday races won't impact access to any of its sites.
Sunday, October 11
The marathon and half-marathon start at Espace 67 on Île Sainte-Hélène and finish at Maisonneuve Park, covering a route that runs from Old Montreal to the north end of the island. Expect significant street closures, particularly on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, which will be closed from Saint-Joseph Avenue to the Rivière des Prairies.
Some areas in Ahuntsic, between Saint-Hubert Street and Parc-Stanley Avenue near Gouin Boulevard, will be particularly impacted. Residents are advised to plan ahead and park their cars outside the zone before Sunday morning.
Best Bets: Metro and Parking
Considering the extensive street closures, taking the metro might be your best bet for commuting or attending the races. The STM recommends Pie-IX station for both Saturday's start and finish, and Jean-Drapeau for Sunday's start. Expect these stations to be busier than usual.
For those who must drive, Waze will be updated with the planned closures, so it's essential to check before you leave. The STM has also provided a detailed map of the closures in their flyer.
