Homeless Encampment on the River near my House, what to do?

There's a homeless encampment on a river near my house. They leave trash and rotting fish behind. I want to report it, but I'm not sure who to contact. I've looked into 311, the parks department, and FWC, but they seem uninterested.

It's usually best to let professionals handle the situation. Contact your non-emergency number and express your concerns to them. You might also consider reaching out to local community aid organizations or attending a neighborhood association meeting to discuss community topics.

I live near a park and have homeless individuals living on my street or in the park. Some of them reside in their cars, making it challenging to find parking. In addition, they often leave trash, including McDonald's wrappers and shopping carts, in public areas. If I were to litter or leave trash in the same manner, I'm sure I'd receive criticism from others.

Approaching homeless individuals with trash bags and asking them to clean up is not an effective solution. This approach can be perceived as insensitive and may even lead to violent reactions, as some homeless individuals may feel they have nothing to lose.

In Miami, there's a law that allows for the removal of homeless encampments through code enforcement. If a county fails to address the issue within a certain timeframe, it may face a lawsuit. Typically, law enforcement offers homeless individuals shelter and services, giving them the option to accept or decline these resources.

As someone who worked in Urban Design, Resilience Design, and Landscape Design for the city, I've witnessed firsthand the city's reluctance to address pressing issues. Despite presenting numerous solutions and options, they've chosen to prioritize development over community concerns. This lack of willingness to address problems has left me feeling disillusioned and frustrated.

You might want to consider contacting Code Compliance to report the garbage issue. They're required to investigate and address the situation. Additionally, you could reach out to the Homeless Trust, which receives significant funding from taxes, and ask them to get involved in resolving this issue. Another organization, Favela, operates in the Miami area with the goal of ending homelessness, so you may also want to contact them for assistance.
