What to do with a tree causing problems in my Mexico City home?

I have a tree in my backyard that's causing problems. It's growing too tall and hitting power lines, which causes them to disconnect when it's windy. I've also noticed that its roots are damaging my drain and the neighbor's fence. I reported the issue to the city two years ago, but they didn't do anything. I've tried to prune the tree myself, but I'm not sure if I should remove it completely. I'm worried about the legal implications and potential fines.

Your main problem is that the tree wasn't planned for in the first place. The roots will keep damaging the fence and drain as long as the tree has room to grow. You can try cutting the roots, but this will harm the tree. Just prune the tree regularly, like you would your own hair. If you really want to get rid of it, you can use herbicide, but be sure to warn your neighbors and wear a mask, as it's toxic and carcinogenic.

Removing a tree taller than 2.3 meters will be costly. A tree with specific characteristics is considered an ecological asset, regardless of its location. If it's over 2.3 meters tall, you can't remove it yourself. You'll need to contact the authorities who will assess the situation and provide a resolution. You'll have to pay for their services, and you'll also need to file a report for smaller trees.

You still haven't clarified whether the tree is on your property or on the sidewalk. If it's on the sidewalk, you'll be in trouble if you try to cut it down. You should notify the authorities, document the damage it's causing, and file a report with photos and evidence. You should also notify the power company and internet provider, as they may need to trim branches to avoid power outages. If the tree is on your property and it's not an endangered species, you can simply cut it down.
