Scams in Roma Norte?

Scams in Roma Norte?
Other 4 answers • Laura
While walking down the street in Roma Norte, a couple approached us and claimed their money and credit cards were stolen. They asked us to help them find the US embassy, which was more than 3 miles away. They also asked us to find a nearby Catholic Church, but my wife struggled to find one due to cell connection issues. We suggested they ask the people at a nearby pharmacy, and they seemed to accept that and walked away. My wife immediately felt nervous and said she thought that was a scam. What could this have been?

People who scam you on the streets often seem disoriented. They might ask for directions, money, or borrow your phone. It's possible they're trying to create a distraction for a partner to steal from you.

It's common for scammers to use a sob story to distract you, and then a partner will steal from you. A friend of mine experienced this while we were dining on Alvaro Obregon. A man approached our table, asked if we spoke English, claimed to have lost his cash, and asked for directions to an ATM. We gave him directions, and he left. Later, my friend's card went missing. Reviewing the footage, we saw a second person behind the table.

T-Mobile service can be spotty when roaming abroad. Considering this, it's possible that the people you were helping genuinely needed assistance. However, if they didn't take anything from you, it's puzzling how you were scammed, especially if it only took a few minutes of your time.
