Gulf Turtles Return to La Paz Beaches: A Positive Sign for Conservation
In late September 2026, La Paz, Baja California Sur, welcomed a significant environmental milestone: the return of the endangered Gulf loggerhead turtles to their historic nesting grounds. According to the Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa), 14 nests have been protected and monitored until the hatchlings emerge. This is a bright spot in the ongoing conservation efforts to preserve these magnificent creatures.
The turtles' return is part of a broader initiative involving local communities and environmental groups. Marco Beltrán, a reporter with El Sudcaliforniano, highlights the importance of citizen observer networks in the article Red de Observadores Ciudadanos: when seeing the sea becomes a conservation tool. This network has been crucial in monitoring turtle activities and ensuring their safety.
