I've been laid off for a while from my full-time job and want to find something part-time to get by. I spoke to a barista the other day and they told me its super competitive in the city and usually require someone with 2-3 years experience. The thing is I don't have any part-time experience to add to my resume like barista/bartending/etc. What other jobs could I consider? I am guessing employers don't want to hire someone who previously did office work. My only part-time experience is from 10+ years ago where I worked as a cashier.

A cashier stint may seem unimpressive, but it's actually a valuable experience. Many retail stores prioritize reliability and basic math skills over extensive qualifications. Stockroom work at bookshops or hardware stores often has fewer applicants than barista positions. When creating a CV, focus on customer-facing or deadline-driven roles, and frame your corporate background in terms of reliability and people skills rather than financial reports.

Dishwashers are always in demand, and I've found the work to be surprisingly relaxing. Restaurant jobs can also provide a steady income and help you avoid financial difficulties.

If you're interested in getting a restaurant job, focus on presenting yourself as a reliable and capable candidate. This may involve maintaining a healthy appearance and being prepared to manage a fast-paced environment. To increase your chances of success, it's essential to demonstrate your ability to work well under pressure and provide excellent customer service.

If you're eligible, applying for unemployment benefits can provide financial support during this time. Taking a break from work can give you the opportunity to focus on finding a new job that meets your needs.

It's essential to prioritize your well-being and avoid overcommitting yourself. Taking on multiple jobs can drain your energy and make it more challenging to find a stable, well-paying position. Unemployment benefits may offer better financial support than gig work, but you'll need to meet the eligibility criteria.

Unfortunately, I've been in a similar situation for quite some time. I was laid off in early 2025 and struggled to find a new job due to the poor market conditions. I've since been doing contract work and living with relatives, but I'm still searching for a full-time role. I'm facing a deadline to start earning a steady income, as my Medicaid benefits are at risk of being revoked in a few months.
