Airlines Increase Fees: A Threat to Los Cabos’ Competitive Edge
As summer winds down and we prepare for the upcoming dry season, a new development in Los Cabos could affect us all: an increase in the DNR (Departamento de Navegación y Reglamentos) fee by the airlines. According to Emprhotur, this hike poses a significant risk to the competitiveness of La Paz as a tourist destination.

Gilberto Santisteban Flores, a spokesperson for the hospitality sector, warns that this increase could lead to a loss of up to 265,000 passengers. If this happens, it could severely impact the local economy, especially in a place where tourism is the backbone of the community. As an expat in Los Cabos for over eight years, I can attest to the importance of a steady flow of visitors.
The local hotel industry is already advocating for intervention by legislators to assess the potential impact of this increase. For digital nomads and expats like myself, this is not just a political issue-it’s a practical one. If the tourism numbers drop, the entire ecosystem of services and amenities we rely on could be jeopardized.
