Houston to Austin for Freaky Deaky Oct 30: US-290 or I-10 to 71?

My group is heading back to Austin for Freaky Deaky at the Travis County Expo Center on October 30 and 31. We're trying to get inside around 3:30 PM Friday instead of rushing in after dark. Parking opens at 2 PM and gates open at 3 PM, so we're thinking about leaving Houston at 8:30 AM. Would you stick with US-290 or take I-10 to 71? Every time we've left after lunch on a Friday, we've gotten stuck on 290 near Elgin.

In my experience, the route 290 > 21 > 71 is a viable option. However, I've found that taking 10 > 71 is generally faster, although the difference isn't significant.

My preferred route is 290 > 21 > 71. Be aware that the speed limit drops to 35mph in Giddings, and there are frequent police checks for speeders.

I often take 290 when heading to Austin, as it's a more convenient route for me. I usually exit I-10 and return on 290.

Taking 10 to 71 is a straightforward choice. Additionally, stopping at Hruska's in Ellinger for kolaches is a great reason to take this route, and you'll likely avoid the Friday morning traffic if you leave by 8:30.

For me, 290 is the clear choice. I just can't stand the traffic on 71.
