Living in Hoi An

Hoi An is a small riverside town on the central coast of Vietnam, built around a UNESCO-listed old quarter of merchant houses, tailoring shops and lantern-lit streets. It is quieter and slower than Da Nang half an hour up the road, which is where residents go for the airport, larger hospitals and big-box shopping. Life here concentrates on the Old Town, the beaches at An Bang and Cua Dai, and the rice fields between them; the trade-off for the setting is a wet autumn, when flooding along the Thu Bon river is routine.
