Whether you live here or are just visiting, it is a good idea to take note of Italy’s holidays. Many of the country’s official 12 public holidays are tied to the Catholic calendar. Some regions have their own additional observance. During these days, you will find that many places of business are closed.

Here are the date to mark on your calendar:

An overview of public holidays in Italy

Italy has 12 national public holidays, along with various local holidays related to patron saints. While many of the holidays are rooted in Catholic traditions, others commemorate historical events like Republic Day and Liberation Day.

Most businesses, offices, and schools close on these days, though tourist areas may remain open.

If a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, Italians often take a ponte (bridge) day for an extended weekend.

Local holidays in 2025

Most Italian municipalities (comuni) have a local holiday that they celebrate. These frequently relate to patron saints or important historical dates.

While not official holidays, places of business often close during those days, including banks and supermarkets. As such, you should prepare ahead to make sure you don’t find yourself in front of a closed door. And, maybe check with your work if you have the day off.

The list below includes some of these local holidays, but not all (Italy has more than 7,900 municipalities). It’s recommended you check with your local comune to find out any concrete dates.

Like most of the rest of the world, Italy has important days that are not official public holidays, for example, Mother’s Day or the start of Carnivale. Businesses won’t close during those days, but they are still important to note down.
