Romanian Mushroom Pickers in Warsaw: A Growing Concern for Local Forests

Just as they did a few years ago, Romanian mushroom pickers have returned to the Suchedniów forests in Poland’s Świętokrzyskie region, this time with a larger and better-organized group of around 50-80 people. They are causing local concerns, not just for the abundance of mushrooms they collect but also for their lack of adherence to local rules and regulations.

The pickers, equipped with refrigerated vehicles and transport vans, sleep in their cars and vans, and are highly effective at gathering mushrooms. Their presence is raising eyebrows among local residents, who complain about the theft of baskets from other pickers. Forest district manager Piotr Dyrka notes that while they can be moved and fined, there is little more the authorities can do.

The commercial value of mushrooms in Germany, where they are subject to strict regulations, makes the Romanian pickers' activities potentially profitable. However, the authorities have not investigated what happens to the mushrooms collected by these pickers.
