What should I pack for my first trip to Tulum, Mexico?

My family and I will be visiting Tulum in December for a week, but we'll only have about 4/5 days there due to travel and arrival at the resort. We're planning to do some water-based activities and I'm trying to figure out what to pack for the daily activities.

I've found that a backpack's type doesn't make a big difference. I usually bring a fanny pack and a sarong to the cenotes, but if I don't want to wear my swimsuit the whole time, I'll bring a backpack. Drying off happens quickly here. You can bring a water bottle, but buying water in plastic bottles is common and available at cenotes. Some people wear water socks, but I prefer to have my feet on the ground. Many cenotes have restaurants or snack stands. One thing to keep in mind is that you'll be asked to shower before swimming if you've applied sunscreen or other products to your skin, as they can harm the ecosystem.

When visiting cenotes, be mindful of your belongings to avoid theft. It's a good idea not to leave valuable items unattended. Some visitors have reported issues with stolen items at certain cenotes, so it's worth being cautious. That's my only piece of advice.

When heading out, consider packing essentials like sunscreen, money, a phone, and a hat. You may also want to bring a lightweight bag to carry your belongings. I visit Tulum at least three times a year. My must-haves include a swimsuit, a favorite beach blanket, bug spray to prevent bites, a good book, and flip flops. I find that having these essentials helps me relax and enjoy my time in Tulum.
