The sun sets over Tulum, casting a warm glow over the beach as I sit at a café, sipping coffee and reflecting on the journey of Amira Neme, a blue belt jiu-jitsu practitioner who has transformed her weekly class into a world championship title. Amira, a 32-year-old Argentine living in Tulum since 2018, has not only brought her sport to new heights but also found a balance with her family and work.

Amira Neme: From One Class a Week to World Championship in Tulum

Amira started her jiu-jitsu journey in May 2025, attending one class a week. Six months later, she had accumulated seven matches, seven wins, and three submissions, earning her six gold medals. Now, she is training for the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds in Las Vegas, aiming to compete in the blue-belt Master 1 bracket on December 10.

Her training partner and coach, Juan Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz, at Jiu Jitsu Tulum México, has been pivotal. 'He made me feel that I could get there even if I was late or with my daughters. What mattered was finding a way to be there,' Amira said. This open environment has allowed her to integrate her motherhood into her practice, making the mat a place where her daughters feel welcome.

Amira's story is a reminder that jiu-jitsu is not just about physical strength but also about recognizing the strength within. 'To practice it, you need a lot of presence. Being aware of your body and the other person's, taking care of yourself and taking care of them,' she explained. 'That is why I say it is a bit my yoga, my meditation.'

For expats and digital nomads in Tulum, Amira's journey serves as inspiration. Whether you're juggling work and family or seeking a new passion, Tulum offers a community where you can find your balance and pursue your goals. If you're interested in jiu-jitsu, Jiujitsu Tulum México is a great place to start, offering a welcoming and supportive environment.
