I'm about to graduate with my PhD in health sciences/social sciences and have been struggling to find work in Toronto. I've been applying for research positions with no response. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for employment agencies that can help with resumes, career planning, networking, or training.

Congratulations on achieving academic success. Your university or sponsor likely has connections with professionals in your field. Your research may have also opened doors to potential opportunities. During your 7-10 years of education, did your academic advisors ever discuss career paths after graduation? A good starting point could be government agencies that hire PhD holders for policy development or managing public-private partnerships. For instance, the Ontario Center of Innovation, the Ministry of Health, and hospitals often have such roles available.

Pharmaceutical companies can be a viable option. My ex worked in the industry for 15 years after completing their post-doc in neuropharmacology. They held a role that involved coordinating with medical professionals, conducting research, and providing liaison services.

To find relevant agencies, look for those specializing in professional services or technical/scientific fields. Check the client or employer section of their websites, not the job board, to see which industries they serve. If an agency doesn't cater to your field or related industries, it's unlikely they'll have clients seeking candidates with your qualifications.

The Ontario Internship Program is a great opportunity to gain experience in the Ontario Public Service. It offers a year's salary and can lead to a full-time position. The program is competitive, but having a PhD can be an advantage. There's also the Summer Employment Opportunity program, which provides a shorter-term experience and can be a stepping stone for government jobs.

Keep in mind that employment agencies typically focus on temporary or contract work and may not be the best fit for your search. You're likely looking for staffing or recruitment agencies that specialize in placing candidates in permanent roles.
