Toronto’s Food Banks Strain as Canvassing Numbers Reach New Heights

As a seasoned accountant working with newcomers in Toronto, I've seen my fair share of the city's diverse communities. However, recent data from Food Banks Canada’s 2026 HungerCount report paints a stark picture that requires our attention. Monthly food bank visits have hit an alarming 2.35 million, a 9% increase from last year and a 117% jump since 2019. This trend is not limited to a few regions; British Columbia and Alberta have seen significant increases, with B.C. reporting 250,505 monthly visits, a 14% rise from 2025, and Alberta at 230,196 visits, a 9.3% increase year-over-year.

Children are also among those affected, with Quebec recording the highest monthly visits from children at 274,193, followed by Ontario at 253,520. Single individuals remain the most common household type accessing food banks, with women over 18 making up 53.4% of clients and people from marginalized communities accounting for 49.9%. These figures underscore the growing financial strain on households, particularly due to rising grocery prices and other essentials. The report attributes this trend to mounting pressure on household finances, including rising housing costs, food inflation, and inadequate income support.

Food Banks Canada is urging governments to take action, suggesting measures such as doubling the Canada Workers Benefit, removing barriers to the Disability Tax Credit, expanding funding for affordable public housing, and strengthening grocery and essentials benefits for Northern communities. For expats and digital nomads like myself, these changes could significantly impact our financial planning and local support networks. As Toronto continues to grow, it's crucial to remain aware of these issues and advocate for policies that support our neighbors and communities.
