...Bagaces Sees Growing AI Hub, But Concerns Persist...
In the northern Bagaces district of Costa Rica, plans for a new Palo Negro AI & HPC Campus have ignited discussions among residents, local officials, and environmental groups. The proposed mega-data center aims to create employment opportunities and boost the district's status in the AI industry. However, questions remain about the substantial energy and water requirements needed to sustain such a facility.

Stellio Bertossi Sartori, President of Cosfin Energía S.A., presented the project at a municipal council meeting, outlining plans for a 120 MW renewable energy generation system and 38 MW power demand.
Despite indicating potential job creation and promising to work with the ICE for energy stability, Bertossi Sartori did not provide clear answers on the specific methods for cooling the data center or whether they would incorporate a private wind farm. This has fueled concerns about water usage and the environmental impact on Bagaces' water resources.
The concerns are not unfounded. The proposed center would require a significant amount of energy, estimated to be 38 megavatios (MW), and water for cooling, which could strain the already limited water resources in the area. Bagaces, like many other parts of Costa Rica, is facing challenges in balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
Local officials and environmental groups have raised concerns about the potential impact on the local ecosystem and the long-term viability of the project. They argue that the center's high energy and water demands could lead to increased pollution and strain on the region's already fragile water supply.
Residents of Bagaces are particularly concerned about the potential for water scarcity and the impact on their daily lives. They have expressed worries about the long-term effects of the project on their community, including potential disruptions to their way of life and the potential for increased costs related to water and energy.
While the project promises to create jobs and boost the local economy, many residents and environmentalists believe that these benefits should come with a commitment to sustainable practices and a thorough environmental impact assessment. They argue that the project should be designed in a way that minimizes its environmental footprint and ensures that it does not compromise the region's water resources.
