As a resident of Santurce, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of military presence on our community. According to recent data, the U.S. military spent over $16.2 million on housing-related expenses in Puerto Rico during the 2026 fiscal year, with a significant portion of this activity scattered across 58 municipalities, including my hometown of Santurce.

Militants’ Housing Spending: A $16.2M Boost to Santurce’s Economy

This spending includes not just rent but also utility bills, making a noticeable dent in local economies. For instance, in Santurce, military personnel contributed approximately $223,000, a substantial amount that helps keep the lights on and the water flowing in our homes.

The data shows that the military’s housing allowance is a key driver of local economic activity. Ulises Marrero, the principal executive officer of Fort Buchanan, highlighted the broader impact, saying, 'Our military personnel live in communities throughout Puerto Rico, pay rent, consume services, and are part of the daily life of those municipalities. Each of these payments represents a direct contribution to the local economy.'

Understanding where and how much the military spends can be useful for those looking to rent or buy in Santurce. For example, knowing that military personnel are currently spending a significant amount in Santurce can influence local property markets, making it a strategic location for investors or those seeking a steady rental income.

Additionally, Fort Buchanan operates on an annual budget of about $500 million, supporting a community of around 15,000 people. This includes active service members, reservists, and members of the Puerto Rico National Guard, among others. The Fort’s housing office maintains a registry of available properties for military personnel assigned to Puerto Rico.
