Earlier this month, Panama City experienced a worrying malaria outbreak centered around the Merca Panamá wholesale food market. With 37 positive cases, it's crucial for expats and digital nomads to stay informed about the situation and take necessary precautions.

The outbreak, primarily affecting informal workers, highlights the importance of awareness and preparedness. Many of these workers are from indigenous Guna communities and have been sleeping in the dense, wooded areas surrounding the market. Health officials have emphasized that it is safe to consume food from Merca Panamá, as malaria is transmitted exclusively through mosquito bites and not through food or person-to-person contact.

Local health teams are actively testing, treating, and fumigating the affected areas. Six individuals have already completed their treatment and been discharged. Health officials advise anyone spending time in mosquito-prone areas to wear long clothing, apply repellent, and seek medical attention if a fever develops.

For expats and digital nomads, this means staying vigilant, especially if you frequent areas near the market or spend time outdoors in wooded areas. It's a reminder to always take preventive measures and follow health guidelines to ensure your family's safety.
