New York City has seen its share of new developments, but the New Brownsville Multi-Service Center stands out for its impressive sustainability features and public art. Completed two years ahead of schedule and $10 million under budget, the center is a sign of the city's commitment to both progress and community. Located at 444 Thomas S. Boyland Street, the facility is a four-story, all-electric building designed by Marvel, offering 10 office spaces, flexible conference rooms, and a community garden.

What makes this center truly unique is its focus on sustainability and community engagement. With green roofs, solar panels, and large windows maximizing natural light, it's expected to meet or exceed LEED Gold certification. Additionally, the building features a large-scale public art installation by Jazmine Hayes, an East New York-native artist. The installation, titled 'I Am Protected,' is a four-part series that celebrates the history, present, and future of Brownsville.

The first part, 'In my mother’s garden,' depicts a person planting a seed as a deity pours water onto the land, with a map of patterned designs in the background. The next part, 'I am divinely guided,' features a suspended spiral made of 44 cowry shells, upcycled and rendered in resin. The third part, 'Like the seeds in my cornrows,' draws on the history of storytelling and braid maps, with braid-pattern motifs designed by local youth. The final part, 'I shall grow tall to the skies,' is a massive mural of a Moko Jumbie, a stilt walker rooted in West African and Caribbean traditions.

This center not only provides a space for community-based organizations and Brooklyn Community Board 16 but also serves as a reminder of the cultural heritage and resilience of the Brownsville community. For expats and digital nomads like me, it's a sign that the city is embracing innovation and artistry to enhance the lives of its residents.
