Lead Concerns Loom Large Near Kahnawake High School
Recent tests have revealed alarming levels of lead in the air around the high school in Kahnawake, a Mohawk community just outside Montreal. According to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK), lead levels were on average 1.5 times higher than the provincial standard of 100 nanograms per cubic metre when the wind was blowing west towards the community. This finding has raised serious concerns for families living in the area, particularly those with children attending the nearby Kahnawake Survival School.

For expats and digital nomads living in or visiting Montreal, the news of lead contamination in the air is a significant health issue. The proximity of the school to the industrial area, where waste management plants are located, poses a potential risk to students and staff. While the lead levels are currently below the threshold that would cause immediate alarm, the long-term effects of exposure, especially for children, cannot be ignored.
Mylène Ratelle, a professor at the Université de Montréal’s public health school, emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures. She noted that lead has no safe threshold and recommended regular monitoring of the situation. The MCK is working with Environment Canada for further tests and analysis, which should provide a clearer picture of the ongoing risks.
For families, this means staying informed and possibly taking additional precautions. If you are considering sending your child to the Kahnawake Survival School, or if you are living in the area, it’s important to be aware of the situation and to follow any guidance provided by the MCK and local authorities.
The next steps will involve more extensive testing and analysis to determine if the lead levels pose a danger to the community. For now, the school is planning to run additional tests to ensure the air filtration system is functioning properly. The MCK and Environment Canada will continue to collaborate to provide the necessary support and information to the community.
As an expat or digital nomad, it’s crucial to stay updated on local health advisories and to take necessary precautions to protect your family. The situation is evolving, and ongoing vigilance is key.
