Navigating the Rainy Season: A Guide for Drivers in Los Cabos
Living in or visiting Los Cabos during the rainy season means dealing with more than just occasional showers. The transformation from a dry, sunny landscape to one filled with mud and danger can catch even the most seasoned expat off guard. Here's what you need to know to keep your vehicle and your sanity intact.
Arroyo Crossings: The Number One Hazard
Arroyos, those dry riverbeds that turn into raging torrents during heavy rains, are the most predictable danger. During the summer, they're harmless streambeds filled with dust and tumbleweeds. But in the rainy season, they become fast-moving, unpredictable forces that can sweep vehicles downstream. Warning signs exist, but their enforcement is inconsistent. If you see standing or moving water, don't cross. The depth is impossible to judge, and the current can be stronger than it looks.
Road Conditions and Maintenance
The rainy season exacerbates existing issues on paved roads. Potholes that were minor annoyances in June become major obstacles by September. Dirt roads and rural routes, on the other hand, can become impassable even with four-wheel drive. Check local conditions before heading inland to hot springs, remote beaches, or mountain communities. A road that was perfectly drivable in April may be a churned-up mess by late summer.
What to Carry in Your Vehicle
The standard advice for driving in Baja applies year-round, but the rainy season raises the stakes. At a minimum, carry:
- Extra water, at least two liters per person. If you're stranded, you may wait hours for the water to recede.
- A charged cellphone and a car charger. Coverage is improving, but you can call for help or check road conditions if you can get a signal.
- Basic tools and a spare tire. Tow trucks exist, but response times in rural areas can be long.
- A flashlight. Storms often arrive late in the day, and road closures don't always include lighting.
- Cash. Roadside assistance, detours through toll roads, or small-town mechanics may require it.
